With over 50 years of hunting experience and 37 years as a professional dog trainer and hunting guide, Tom Tomoser is engaged in the development of a new breed of versatile hunting dog. The breed started because Tomoser was given a English Pointer Beagle cross pup who turned out to be one of the finest dogs Tomoser ever owned. Quincey’s finest quality however was his bubbling over friendly personality, and his level headed easy going temperament, add to that a super intelligent dog and you have a dog that is a joy to own.
Tomoser wanted to have progeny from this fine dog and therefore determined the best breed to further the line would be a German Wirehaired Pointer. Since the Beagle was the controlling personality in Quincey, the EP Beagle cross avoiding any possible recessive hound trait would be necessary. The German Short Hair was avoided for that reason. The short hair has Hound in it’s make up. The GWP has 1/5 GSP in it’s make up but no other hound connection. The GWP also has a double shot of Pudle or Poodle that gives the GWP it retrieving ability, love of water and intelligence.
Starting with Quincey a superb dependable hunter, who with training retrieved to hand from land or water, feather or fur, and he tracked deer as well. (See Attached Articles) Tom bought and trained a GWP from champion hunting lines and named her Ava Von Holly. Ava is a fine example of a GWP. Physically she has no faults other than being on the small side for a GWP. Ava is an alpha bitch and processes the drive and of her champion ancestors.
The breeding started when Ava was 1 yr. old. We kept one male pup, Spot from the first breeding to be the next link in the chain to build the “American Pointer.”
We had hoped to get Ava’s staunch pointing ability and fine heavy coat in the pups with the bonus being Quincey’s easy going temperment and personality. We got the coat and the personality but no pointing instinct. To bring in more pointing instinct we bought an English Pointer bitch pup to be bred to Spot. We named the new pup Daphne Chapin-Dunsbury. I was amazed at what a people and dog friendly lady Daphne is. She is even more friendly than Quincey was. Much to my pleasant surprise Daphne showed a natural retriever instinct from the first week at home with us and is now retriving quail quite well. She is behaving much the same as Spot did when he was pup, always carrying things around. Spot is the best retriever in our kennel and is a fine marker as well as a high speed retrieving machine. As of this writing Daphne is 5 months old and we hope to breed her in September at about 1 year old as we did Ava.
The number one factor in my breeding theory that I learned from Sigbot “Bodo” Winterhelter, is that the 2 most important dogs in a pedigree are the pups parents. The farther back in the chart the less effect they have on the pup. So when you look at the two most important dogs in the breeding, the mother and the father, and you like what you see, the possibilities exist that you will get what you are breeding for. By the way “BoDo” is the founder of the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association, NAVHDA, and the man most responsible for getting the PudlePointer recognized in the U.S. by the AHC, and probably one of the finest dog trainers in the world.
What we’re looking for from Spot and Daphne’s pups are solid, fast, friendly, pointing dogs, with a heavy coat, that do it all; “The American Pointer.”
We are looking for people who are hunters and dog lovers who would like to take part in the development of the “American Pointer.” We need people who will raise and train pups and breed the next generation of Spot and Daphne’s progeny.
You can view all 3 foundation dogs Quincey, Ava, and Spot at work in our training DVD “It’s In The Bag.” Judge for yourself and see if you would like to participate in this program. If do use the contact us button and send us a note.

First the symbols:
Q= Quincey: A or Av = Ava: S= Spot: D= Daphne B or Bu = Buck(Daphne’s father) An=Andy: Am= Amanda:
Observations and conclusions:
Andy will be bred to his grandmother Ava the purebred GWP to reinforce the coat, retrieveing and pointing traits. Likewise Amanda will be bred to Buck her grandfather to reinforce the pointing traits. These breedings will produce the “B” litters. The “B” litters will have identical pedigrees, but “B” 1 litter and “B” litter 2 have sister Amanda and brother Andy Bred to their grandparents or in other words the progeny of Litter “B” 1 & “B” 2 are cousins. The children of brothers and sisters are cousins. Therefore when we breed the “B”1 Progeny to the “B”2 progeny we will be breeding 1st cousins to produce the “C” litters and from there on out we should breed nothing but cousins. To the “D” litter and beyond.
